  • Communications – BCBS check has been received and has been deposited in our savings account. We are awaiting delivery of sign from BCBS and the press release is underway (Donna is working with Jerry with the Town of Morrisville to complete).
  • Garden Coordinator – Don is out working his internship. Need to determine areas for planting of fall crops. Need to prep unused beds for the fall plantings.
  • Educational/Outreach – Donna, Karsten & Jane worked the Education Booth at the Western Wake Farmer’s Market on Saturday, June 15th. At the WWFM we met a Master Gardener from Ohio as well as Virginia who has great experience and quite a bit of information to share. She has sent two & one half pages of excellent resource materials/books. Another person came by who heads up a girl scout troop who is interested in bringing them out for some hands on education. We will post this information on the web site. Donna sent note to the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) Extension & Outreach coordinator a note regarding hosting a workshop for composting. We are awaiting a response at this time.
  • Treasury Report – Reported bank balance / bills paid / membership dues collected. We need to pay out website dues, insurance, water bill and our next PO box rental.

Call to Order

    • Motion to approve agenda – passed
    • Review of Minutes from previous meeting being passed around for acceptance/approved. Minutes reviewed & approved.
    • Legal – Rob’s friend Toni is reviewing the documentation and seems to be under the impression that the problem is that members can take home produce. Need to update change of address, changes of board with NC Secretary of State – once IRS designation changes are completed.
    • Communications – Fred will continue to help working on web site, but, we need to find someone else to handle the remainder of the communication duties. BCBS will be issuing the check next week. Further instructions are expected to be received regarding the press release. Press release is being sent onto the Morrisville Public Information Officer – they will add the town logo and a note will go into the next Town of Morrisville newsletter. Suggestions for expenditures include, scale, smaller tiller for rows, more community outreach/innovative ideas to get the community involved. Sign from BCBS – deliver to Jane’s house. Exact location of fence at garden is TBD.
    • Garden Coordinator – A good number of folks are participating in the garden on Saturday mornings. Don will be gone Monday – Friday next month and possibly will be working on Saturdays. Expected activities over the next month are weeding & harvesting. Start fall planting and harvest. A section needs to be rototilled, the tiller needs work (will take tiller into Cary Mower & Saw for an estimate), area behind corn is muddy & untilled, chop down 2 trees, till & plant that area with corn (idea is to have corn harvest around August 15th – maybe do a community outreach event at that time. Winter cover crop needs to be mowed down and place summer cover crop down. Big bed in front of the fava beans needs to be weeded & rototilled. Place poles & cross pieces (trellis in) on the long row & tomato rows. Need oil for lawn mower. Wayne & son planted a fig tree. Herb spiral is being discussed for placement over by the asparagus bed. We will need large decorative rocks for this project. Don to send Donna pictures & video for this project. Need to finish the lasagna bed. We should put up a sign advising No dogs/pets are allowed.
    • Educational/Outreach – AHA is looking for community gardens who are interested in hosting a compost workshop – limited to 30 participants at $10 per person and take donations / perhaps get some future members from such an event. Donna to contact AHA for potential dates (do not schedule for June 15th as we are already scheduled at the WWFM education booth that day).
    • Treasury Report – Reported bank balance / bills paid / membership dues collected.

  • Kartsten Baumann
  • Annie Soni

Call to Order

  • Review of Minutes from previous meeting passed around for acceptance/approved.
  • Legal — Waiting on 501(c) 3 (changing from 501(c)4 (Donna has call into IRS waiting for callback. Rob advises he has an attorney who will be contacting Donna to assist.)
  • Communications — Karsten, Donna, and Jane attended open house at the Morrisville Aquatic & Fitness Center on Thursday April 11th. Donna and Jane attended Morrisville Green Day (volunteered digging and planting plants/trees/bushes in the traffic islands in front of the municipal buildings).
  • Garden Coordinator — Fuel leak in Tiller to be repaired this week. The emergency shut off cable also needs to be fastened to the pull handle. The rain garden has been completed by the NCSU Permaculture Class — purpose is to slow down & filter water moving from garden to downstream areas. The dirt purchased was used for the rain garden so, Don will purchase additional soil when needed (likely from Page Rd garden center). Planted yarrow, joe pye weed, hibiscus, juncus and Chinese honeysuckle (plants donated by Don). Need to get main crops in on April 20th. Suggestion is to plant rows of eggplant (1st), peppers (2nd) & tomatoes (3rd). 3rd time trying spinach finally was successful. Potatoes are coming up. Don will be working at the Arboretum and Center for Environmental Farming Systems during the May through August time frame – so he may not be able to work at the garden on Saturdays. Perhaps will be working more on Sundays at the garden – TBD.
  • Outreach – We donated 25 lbs of Kale, Turnips & Cabbage on March 30th to the Interfaith Food Shuttle (at the Western Wake Farmer’s Market drop off point). Karsten still has the action to contact Panther Creek High School for kids who need community service hours.

  • Elections: Outreach – placed position on hold until other members are available to fill this position. Motion proposed / passed.

Garden Party! Every Saturday 9-11am

100_2236At our February 18 Board Meeting, the Board agreed to hold weekly garden work parties every Saturday from 9-11am (weather permitting). These garden work parties are an excellent opportunity to learn, work, and socialize.

Don, our Master Gardener, will be there each Saturday, unless he has an academic field trip planned. So you can expect to get great guidance in the garden!

The garden parties are posted on our calendar here: http://mcgarden.us/calendar/

Of course, anyone is free to stop by the garden whenever you have free time. If Saturdays don’t work for you, feel free to send a request for a garden buddy to the Wormturners list or the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MorrisvilleCommunityGarden

See you in the garden!
